Dry needling

Dry Needling is an invasive procedure which utilises thin needles that is inserted into the skin and muscle. The needle used is a sterile, single-use, fine filament. The aim of dry needling is to reduce pain and increase function. By inserting the needle into the muscle, it will release knots within the muscle fibres. These knots in the muscle are known as myofascial trigger points.

This method of treatment is a scientific based and modern treatment. Below we have listed some of the conditions that can benefit from dry needling and a brief explanation on how dry needling can be beneficial for that condition.

Shoulder pain

Dry needling can be a great treatment for your shoulder pain depending on causes your pain. Your physiotherapist needs to assess your condition and find out what causes your shoulder pain in your initial appointment and make decision on whether dry needling can be a good treatment for your condition.
With regards to shoulder dysfunction and imbalance, dry needling can be a great treatment. The combination of dry needling with other physiotherapy treatments can be quite beneficial to eliminate the pain or assist the patient to minimise/manage the pain.

What are Myofascial trigger points?

Also known as a knot in the muscle, myofascial trigger points occurs when a group of muscle fibres are shortened when the muscle has been activated during activity but are not able to lengthen back after the muscle has relaxed. The myofascial trigger point can cause a hypersensitivity within the muscle fibre which will lead to tightness which compresses the capillaries and nerves which supplies the muscle. This therefore impacts on the movement of the muscle.
Myofascial triggers point within the muscle may cause discomfort with touch, movement and stretching and can decrease joint range of motion and even a temporary of coordination.

What is the difference between dry needling and acupuncture?

They are not the same, but there is similarity between the two techniques. A major similarity between the two treatments is the theory behind why they work. With dry needling the purpose to reduce pain and improve function by the of release of myofascial trigger points within the muscle. Whereas acupuncture focuses more on treating various medical conditions by triggering various points on the skin to restore flow of energy (Qi).

What cause myofascial trigger points?

Myofascial trigger points occur as a protective response after the following situations:

  • injury
  • unexpected movements
  • quick movements
  • changes to regular activities
  • sustained incorrect posture
  • stress
  • illness
  • nutritional deficiencies
  • nerve impingement
  • metabolic and endocrine conditions

When is most suitable to have dry needling treatment?

  • to release muscle knots
  • for pain management
  • to improve movement around joints

What will you feel during dry needling treatment?

There may be a mild sensation where the needle enters and exits the skin during the treatment. When the needle is inserted, it may cause a twitch in the muscle when the muscle has been stimulated. Patients have not reported of any discomfort during needle manipulation.

Is dry needling safe?

There may be risk for any form of treatment. Please speak to your physiotherapist to determine your suitability for this treatment. Dry needling involves the uses of sterile, single-use needles which are disposed of immediately after use.
Every patient is different and may respond differently to the dry needling treatment. Dry needling is a very safe treatment, however small number of patients may experience some side effects such as noticing bruises or feeling nauseas. In some rare occasions the side effects can also be quite serious. However, for most patients going through this treatment, dry needling is safe and beneficial, and the symptoms may only last for 24-48 hours after the treatment.

Can you exercise after having dry needle treatment?

It is recommended to avoid strenuous or activities that are high impact immediately after the treat to provide the body the best chance to recover and maximise the benefits of this treatment. You may feel soreness after going through your treatment. You can still do stretches and continue doing your daily activities, however if you feel soreness or pain, you must stop the activity and give your muscles some time to recover.
